Environmentally friendly technology of biofilm matrix destruction in water rotation units

Biofilms are highly-ordered bacterial communities formed on biological or artificial surfaces as a result of adhesion, growth and reproduction of microorganisms and polysaccharide extracellular matrix formation.

In nature, biofilms are ubiquitous and create huge problems in human activity, as in medicine, agriculture, food industry, municipal sector and in construction, engineering industry, transport, water supply, oil production, electricity production, i.e. in all water rotation units.

It is proposed to introduce environmentally friendly and harmless technology of biofilm matrix destruction in water rotation units with a purpose to reduce energy consumption.

Distinctive features of the proposed technology are:

– Formulations contain chemical and biological agents in concentrations harmless to humans;

– Formulations exclude chlorine-containing reagents;

– Formulations inhibit corrosion of ferrous alloys;

– Formulations have powerful disinfectant and antiseptic properties.

Basic biological and physico-chemical properties of biofilm:

– Interactive community of different types of microorganisms;

– Microorganisms get together to microcolonies;

– Microcolonies are surrounded by a protective matrix;

– Microorganisms in biofilm are resistant to microbiocides, antibiotics, antimicrobial agents and host response;

– Have low thermal conductivity;

– Cause intense corrosion of metals;

– Accelerate erosion of plastics, wood, ceramics and concrete.

The use of preparations based on chlorine dioxide is widely advertised on the crest of urgency of combating with biofilm formation while operating water rotation units.

However, chlorine dioxide is only a microbiocide with broad antiseptic spectrum over a wide pH range.

Unquestionably, preparations based on chlorine dioxide make deep and high-quality disinfection.

But! High-quality disinfection does not destruct biofilm, i.e. it does not lead to destructive dissolution of extracellular matrix of the biofilm.

It is impossible to recover the original thermal conductivity and optimization of energy consumption in water rotation units without complete destruction of the biofilm.

Halfness of solution to the problem of using preparations based on chlorine dioxide is well known not only to power engineers, and even to the owners of home pools.

We offer to introduce the technology of biofilm matrix destruction in water rotation unit to reduce, optimize energy consumption.

The proposed technology is carried out by formulations, destructing polysaccharide exopolymer – structural framework of the extracellular matrix of biofilm.
